The Selah Gospel Singers
Preserving the Soul of Gospel Music
Music
The Selah Gospel Singers are the great-great grandchildren of the renowned pioneer of women in ministry, preacher and prophetess, the late Evangelist J. Helen Burks.  They bring a wealth of vocal technique and power which has been handed down through seven generations reaching back to the days of North Carolina slavery.

When listening to their songs, you will hear the influence of the ancient African and Cherokee rhythms through drums, tambourines, maracas, pounding stick and washboards. Through their acapella renditions, it will not be difficult to experience the influence of the Primitive Baptist Church.  And those familiar with the Holiness movement, will readily recognize the influence of the "sanctified church" in the hand clapping and foot stomping songs.

This sensational teen trio, ages 16, 18 and 19, are preserving the legacy of foundational gospel music.  They do this not just for their family, but for our family - the people of God.

ABOUT THE SINGERS
The eldest of the group, Samuel is currently studying music at the University of the District of Columbia.  The smoothness of his voice is one key in bringing the melodious balance of Selah's renditions.  Whether singing bass, baritone or tenor, Samuel is able to convey the warmth of the gospel in his singing.  Not only is he an accomplished singer, but Samuel is also an extraordinary trumpeter who plays from his heart and with passion that can be felt by all.
Maella, a college freshman, is  by all accounts a phenomenal vocalist who embodies the persona of a legendary singer to be.  The maturity in her voice is often mistaken for an older generation vocalist.  For her part in the group, Maella demonstrates a vast vocal range from baritone to soprano.   Her voice is recognized as powerful and compelling.  When listening to this young lady belt out tunes like How I Got Over, or Father, I Stretch  My Hand To Thee one can not help but be moved by the power of her sound.

The youngest of the group, Jonathan is a high school senior.   Among the group, he is seen as the harmony setter.  Jonathan's strong voice, provides the raw harmonic balance that puts the simple foundation to Selah's sensational sound.  The power of his voice is controlled and skillfully applied.  His tenor and bass renditions have the feel of the 'old deacons' that sat on the front row across from the mourner's bench in days gone by.
